Is it too late to wish you a Happy New Year?!
I hope you are all set for a productive and successful 2025.
NEW NEWSLETTERMulti-Me - The Career Multiplier Effect
My resolution for the new year is to start sharing more content, especially now that I have a book almost ready to publish. I will share content about how you can make the most of your work life and how to turn a personal brand into a personal business.
Based on my new book 'Multi-Me', this weekly newsletter will focus on creating your own career multiplier effects.
From my research, 99% of people don't have a documented long-term career plan. I want to change that and share how to make quick wins which have a long-term multiplier effect.
So to kick off with my weekly news, here are 5 things on my mind for 2025.
#1 - Workers don’t want to work
If you are not too excited about the work year ahead, you are not alone. Sadly, one of the biggest problems faced in the world today is the massive number of disengaged employees at work. Gallup put this number at 85% of workers globally, costing over $8 trillion in 2023.
Work and careers are how most people define themselves. Work is where people spend most of their time each week and during their lives. To be unhappy at work, and watching the clock wasting your precious time is heartbreaking.
This is such a tragic waste of human potential with people unhappy at work. And then to do nothing about it is, and staying stuck is also not a nice place to be. But the golden handcuffs are getting tighter each year. I want to show people how to escape their prison should they wish to do so.
#2 - The 9-5 is dead
Jobs are being shed fast. Jobs will be lost in technology like AI and automation. Plus the traditional jobs with security are disappearing, so what will replace them? Disengaged workers will see the silver lining in losing their jobs in the coming months and years. But will they make it as independent workers or entrepreneurs?
#3 - Multiple Incomes will become normal
The OECD and others predicts that 50% of workers will have multiple incomes within 10 years. Eh, we didn’t learn how to do this in school. Career education is so far behind on this one, and it could take a decade to catch up. Luckily I have been working on a contemporary career planning book and course called Multi-Me.
#4 - Revenue potential per person to skyrocket
Chat GPT CEO Sam Altman predicts the first one-person billion-dollar company will be here soon. Think about this for a second. This is outrageous. How can one person do all the different jobs required to generate that level of revenue? Think about all the various roles that are involved in billion-dollar companies currently.
We are moving fast from specialists to generalists. Generalists with powerful tools are taking over the world.
#5. Specialists V Generalists
Remember the old saying about being a ‘Jack of all trades, and master of none’? Are these words of wisdom no longer true? With AI tools helping anyone who can type to acquire incredible outputs, previously the domain of expert specialists, are we now in a golden age for Generalists?
How we work is changing and I want to explore and share the stories of pioneers in exponential potential. I want to help those who want to thrive in their chosen career(s) as the world of work sees unprecedented turbulence.
Personally, despite my marketing background, I realised I am no longer Conor a 'Marketer'. I was always much more of a generalist since running a business, but I kept thinking I was a Marketer. Now I realise, it is great to be a 'Multi-Me' or a 'Multi-hyphenate', or have a 'Portfolio Career' - and as such I am now describing myself as 'Conor Lynch - Marketer. Innovator. Designer. Educator.' I can add in more keywords like Author, Speaker, Leader, Connector, but that is enough for now.
Are you a specialist or a generalist? If the latter, what are your keywords?
To broaden your skillset, I recommend you start some personal learning projects to add more skills to your profile, and become more valuable in the workplace of the future.
NEW BOOK - MULTI-MELike many other people, it's a long-time ambition, to write a book. It's not something that I thought about much but, yes, that would be a good thing to do from a personal branding point of view ... if I had something to write about.
While running my marketing agency Connector, we were featured in books and produced small marketing case study books, but I never felt the urge to write a marketing book. However, since I started researching careers, I saw a gap in a modern approach to career planning for people looking for non-linear, non-traditional careers.
There is no standard career path anymore. There are many career options and many career paths open to all. If only there were an easy way to map multiple career paths for multiple income streams in a user-friendly planning template.
As a result, I’m excited to inform you that I will launch a new book soon on modern work and careers.
If you know me, you will know I want to create something original, practical, and actionable. I hope I have achieved this goal and soon we will find out. I will share some of the book previews here in this newsletter so please ensure you are subscribed, and share with others you want to see happy in their work lives. Let me know what you think and I welcome your support and feedback.
Daniel Priestley recently commented to Steven Bartlett on ‘Diary of a CEO’ that 78% of Steven’s esteemed guests on the massively popular podcast were authors. So I’ll keep you posted on the impact of the book on my own career.
